1987, thirty years ago now. The All Blacks won the inaugural Rugby World Cup, the Edgecumbe earthquake struck and NZ became the first nuclear free nation. Rick Astley was “never gonna give us up”, Black Monday hit Wall Street and the previous year’s Census had placed the Canterbury population at around 430,000 people.
